Mac Fontana and Big D formed the duo in 2015, after years of playing in bands. “We wanted to make things simple—sing together and play songs for people without the onslaught of a blasting band,” says Big D. The combination of D on acoustic guitar and Mac on keys allows them to draw on a range of sounds adaptable to anything from Beatles classics to Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer” to something as quirky as Bowie’s “Space Oddity.
Actually, calling Mac Fontana and Big D a duo may be misleading—for many of their shows they enlist drummer Mark E to keep things moving. Guitar and piano alone perfectly suit a quiet song such as the Beatles’ “Hide Your Love Away.” Mac says, “Then, when Mark kicks the drums in and I cover the bass, suddenly it’s a whole band on songs like Counting Crows’ ‘Mr. Jones and Me’ or Queen’s ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love.’”
Starting in the fall of 2015, the group has been entertaining audiences at Fiesta Hermosa, Pickwick’s Pub, the Oyster House Saloon, and a number of private events. So enjoy the music and the harmonies—and let the dancing begin.
